History
Specializing in the design, sale and rental of horse transport vehicles, THEAULT is the worldwide leader in the field of horseboxes and horsestrucks.
Quality, reliability and ergonomics define the products developed by the company, for both private and professional customers.
Creation of ‘Vans THEAULT’
Founded in Avranches, France in May 1924, THEAULT began to build up a wealth of expertise, putting its know-how at the service of its customers.
The company ‘Vans THEAULT’ was founded by Emile Théault, the son of a carpenter born in 1902.
Design of the first horse-drawn vehicle & Bodywork for commercial vehicles
The first THEAULT Hippomobile was launched in 1928. It was the first THEAULT cart pulled by one or two horses and dedicated to the transport of people and goods.
This decade also marks THEAULT’s transformation of the first light vehicle into a utility vehicle, marking the beginnings of industrial bodybuilding within the company.
Company specialization in equine transport
In the 1950s, with a backdrop of democratizing horse-riding, THEAULT refocused its business and specialized in horse trucks.
During this decade, THEAULT created the first 5-horsepower truck with an “Oblique” layout.
The first Citroën Type H floor cab was also fitted out for equine transport.
Creation of the first “rear-head” truck
In the early 60s, THEAULT introduced a revolutionary vehicle with the launch of its first “rear-head” model.
This system was integrated for the first time into the Citroën HY floor cab.
Design of THEAULT towed vans
In the 1980s, the company began designing and manufacturing towed vans.
These models were discontinued at the beginning of the following decade, in favor of the development of the THEAULT small truck range.
New momentum for THEAULT
The 1990s saw a change of management within the company.
This was an opportunity to develop numerous projects, including an eagerly-awaited international launch.
From Europe to North America, via the Middle East and Oceania, THEAULT exports beyond its borders.
Moving the factory & Creating the “Stalle” layout
The 2000s marked a turning point in THEAULT’s history with a change in production location.
The THEAULT factory moved to the outskirts of Avranches, in Ponts, and expanded its industrial workshops.
This gave the teams more room to create a new product range: the MORPHEO, PROTEO and FIRSTEO models were born.
The “Stall” layout was also created and integrated into the various models of the THEAULT collection.
Range renewal, collaborative development & EPV certification
In the 2010s, the THEAULT range evolved considerably… The LIGHTEO model is born, and the PROTEO gets a new design and its revolutionary Switch© system. The MORPHEO is also redesigned, and the truck collection is relaunched with two flagship models: the Endurance and the Elegance.
These years also mark the creation of the Renteo collaborative rental platform, an online solution dedicated to THEAULT truck rentals in France and Europe.
To end this decade on a high note, THEAULT will be awarded the state label “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” in 2019. This label is a mark of recognition that distinguishes French companies with excellent craftsmanship and industrial know-how. It enables THEAULT to proudly bear the colors of France throughout the world.

Our know-how
Metalwork
Craftsmanship
Leathercraft
Bodywork design
Metalwork
This is the first step in building a strong vehicle. The metalworkers prepare all the parts and structures needed to build THEAULT’s horse vans. Thanks to a state-of-the-art welding robot, this is where the cab/horse partitions are manufactured, ensuring the integrity of passengers and horses in the event of a major impact.
Craftsmanship
Carpentry is one of THEAULT’s core crafts. The woodwork is used to fit out cabins for light-duty vehicles (GVWR < 8,500 lb) and luxurious apartments for “living” vehicles. The wood workshop also cuts foam for THEAULT doors, gates and decks.
Leathercraft
The manufacture of leather completes the range of craftsmanship skills preserved within the company. A craft in its own right, our meticulous workmanship enables us to design a quality product down to the smallest detail. If you’re a lover of the finer things in life, you’ll find a vast choice of leather, alcantara, imitation leather and cork references to design your vehicle’s interior just the way you want it.
Bodywork design
The final stage is the bodywork design! In addition to the paintwork, a decoration specialist applies visuals from a range of references, from the simplest to the most original. Your horse van can also be customized with a logo or photos of your choice.
